Vehicle software update technology allows specific software updates for specific vehicle components to be downloaded and installed over the air. This technology provides a convenient way to update your vehicle with the latest software available. This feature is available on 2017 model year and newer vehicles.
Downloading and installing vehicle software updates can be done using the vehicle’s built-in data connection or Wi-Fi® connection. No paid data plan is required. To be eligible for software updates for your vehicle, including automatic Super Cruise map updates (if equipped), you must agree to the Connected Vehicle’s Connected Vehicle User Terms of Service and d-Privacy Policy Vehicle.
Important: During the installation of the vehicle software update, the vehicle is turned off and cannot be driven during the installation. You cannot remove or cancel once the installation has started. Customers are therefore advised to use the “Download/Install” option or wait for a more convenient time using the “Notify me later” or “Schedule” options (if available); or they can exit the vehicle (the update is proposed up to 30 times in the next ignition cycle). If you select Download/Install, the customer will be asked for two confirmations: both an estimated installation time and a message on the vehicle’s touch screen advising that the vehicle will be stationary during the installation.

The first step is to download the software. Download time varies depending on update size and wireless signal strength. While you download the software, you can continue to use your vehicle normally.

Vehicle software update installation times vary depending on the component being updated and the content of the update. A notification in the car will show the estimated time for installation to be completed. Typically, installing the software takes 20 minutes or less.

I’m still surprised they don’t support OTA updates for anything other than the infotainment system. The central display has access to the car’s main CAN bus, so if they really wanted it, they should be able to send an update to the central display and update other hardware via CAN/UDS. This is a well-known route (doing updates via UDS) that GM also has considerable experience with. Why they don’t support it in Bolt, I’m not sure. It appears to be completely doable without any hardware changes. Maybe they tried and got into trouble or didn’t understand the importance of bean counters. We are 99.9% sure that the engineers working on the Bolt want to send OTA updates. If I had worked on the car, I would have definitely contested it.

Click to expand… They did it before, in 2018 or something, but people got mad for some reason (people can get mad like that), they blamed GM for something or other, and basically not it went well. The problem is that Bolt has to re-flash the SOM – it’s BEV2, their second architecture that supports OTA, but that’s a whole pig process. At the same time, Ultifi (BEV3) was released, which supports further upgrades, the most important of which is the separation of components between system and hardware. Well, with Ultifi they did it, Bolt is simply old technology and the retailer would be better off flashing.
In any case, another problem is that at low speeds, if you press the brake and accelerator at the same time, it can generate a traction fault code. The code was added recently in response to the battery issue. So I think this update has a fix for that false positive code (my wife ran it). There are probably other solutions too.
