Learning Activities For 2 Year Olds

A lot can happen between the ages of one and two years, am I right? This must be one of the most developmental and changing years in a child’s life. I don’t have the research to back it up but just thinking about it – it’s crazy how much they learn in the first couple of years.

Toddler Indoor Activities That Are Super Fun

I did a post a while ago about activity ideas for 12-18 month olds and I got a lot of great feedback from it. I wanted to build on this a little further and combine activities for older age groups from one to two years. Every baby and toddler grows at their own pace and in their own way, which makes it difficult to designate an exact age for any of these activities. That’s why I felt it could benefit a wider age group.

Some of the main areas we can focus on when it comes to learning activities at this age are sensory play, fine motor activities, gross motor activities, and arts/crafts.

Sensory play is a child’s best friend. You can achieve a lot with sensory activities, exposing your little one to new knowledge, building vocabulary, and pretend play opportunities. Often, when we hear about sensual play, we think it’s fake. So it doesn’t have to! Here you will find some ideas that can be just as fun, without so much mess. But – it’s good to mess around too. Put a towel on it and soak it up.

Fine motor skills are the use of muscles in the fingers and hands in coordination with our eyes. Working on these skills and strengthening the muscles will help with good grip on pencils, handwriting, scissors, and many other basic skills that children must acquire in the first or second year of primary school.

“Gross motor skills” are the skills to control the major muscles in our bodies that are ultimately used to walk, run, jump, etc. Building these muscles is important for obvious reasons, but I also discovered that in early childhood. As a teacher, children learn and remember things best when they are up and moving, so gross motor skills are always more active.

One word: creativity. Have you ever heard of any negative results created from a child’s release? In the right context that is. 😉 When you do arts and crafts, you give kids a new experience, giving them the opportunity to create and build motor skills, vocabulary and maybe even some sensory toys that can be introduced together.

I put together a bunch of pictures of activities with Kade when he was 1-2 years old, and also collected pictures of new activities I’m doing now with Tatum (who is 19 months old).
